NDIS funding guide

Understanding NDIS funding

How NDIS funding works for everyday supports, Supported Independent Living and SDA: what may be included in a plan, which budget usually pays, and what to discuss with your NDIS contact.

The basics

How NDIS funding works

The NDIS funds supports that are related to your disability and are reasonable and necessary. Your plan groups that funding into support budgets: Core Supports for everyday life, Capacity Building for building skills, and Capital for equipment, home modifications and Specialist Disability Accommodation.

A support may be funded where it's included and appropriate in your plan. Funding isn't automatic: it depends on your goals, your evidence and the NDIA's decision. Most new plans release funding in periods, usually every 3 months.

What to discuss with your NDIS contact

  • Your goals, and the supports that would help you reach them
  • What help you need across an ordinary day and night
  • Where and how you'd like to live, if you're thinking about SIL or SDA
  • The reports and assessments you already have, and any you need
  • Anything that's changed since your last plan, such as a hospital stay
  • How you want your funding managed: NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed
